Bormach was king of the Madlands, which, as the name would suggest, were filled with people who were all quite mad. There was only one sane man in the kingdom in the time of Bormach, and that would be him. This presented the poor ruler with quite a difficult choice: rule as the only sane man in an insane kingdom, or abdicate the throne. He was terribly fond of his kingdom, and wanted to do the best for it that he could.
Day after day he presided over the royal court. The nobles would juggle and dance around, while the jesters brought him news and consulted with him over policies. The farmers would bring him samples of their wines (made from the most fresh of potatoes) or their dairy products (milked from only the premium raccoons). The artisans would provide the royal court with jewelry of coal and clay. It was, in fact, the most insane court to ever have existed.
And in the middle of all this madness king Bormach sat patiently. He tried his very best to walk a line between acting like his people and doing what made the most sense for them. He managed to stop the policy of the royal bedchambers doubling as a henhouse by declaring hens as the national bird and giving them all away to his subjects. At the same time he indulged the citizens in their madness by throwing a weekly gala in honor of the odor of a wet dog.
The Madlands never saw war, though Bormach frequently worried of it, due to all the neighboring countries being highly afraid that the madness would turn out to be contagious. There was little trade with other countries, somehow the Madlands was able to be self-sufficient in nearly every way. Their only import was all the raccoons that other countries would give them, the only exports were surprisingly well-written plays and music.
Bormach was well liked by his people. They considered him to be eccentric and a bit odd, but he was fine with that. As long as he could keep his country running, he was perfectly content. This tale of course asks the question: If there is but one sane man in a sea of uniform insanity, does he not become the only insane man?
